2000 Vistiors

Snow Day X2 + Photo Contest!!!!
Well snow finally fell here in WNY. Last week, a big Lake Effect storm swept through the area and left behind a foot or two of snow in places. With Tifft being on the lake, the blowing snow made it impossible to keep our doors open and we were shut down for the first time this winter season.
With our new entrance, its a bit tricky getting in and out when it snows heavy. We have to hope the plows come often and remember us all tucked away behind route 5 now. So far so good though, no one has been stranded.
No photos to speak of, our collective Tifft Camera has been down with lack of batteries so the snow and ice cannot reach you on the internets. My personal camera has been acting up lately so it may be time for a new one (Christmas present?) But I tell you Lake Kirsty is almost fully iced over and the marsh is fully covered.

PHOTO CONTEST RULES
1 – Pre-registration is required by phone at 825-6397 or email at tifftfriends@yahoo.com. Deadline for registration is December 31st, 2009. Contest will be limited to the first 40 entrants.
2 - All photographs submitted for judging must be taken at Tifft Nature Preserve between December 1st, 2009 and December 31st, 2009 and the physical photograph will become the property of The Friends of Tifft Nature Preserve, Inc.
3 – The competition is open to amateur photographers 16 years and older only.
4 – Entries may be color or black and white, no larger then 8” x 10” and unmounted, All Photos must reflect the subject matter and scene as it appears. Acceptable alterations are adjustments to color, hue, and contrast; removal of dust and scratches; cropping; and conversion from color to black and white. Any photo found to be altered beyond standard optimization will be disqualified.
5 - To be eligible for prizes, entrants must be present on Sunday January 17th, 2010 at 2PM at the Tifft Nature Preserve Visitors Center.
6 – You must be the sole author and owner of the photograph and there is a limit of four images per contestant.
7 – Your full name, address, phone number and email must be labeled on the back of each image.
8 – Entries must be delivered to the Gift Shop at Tifft Nature Preserve Visitors Center no later then 4:00PM on, January 10th, 2010. We will not print your picture from disc or other format. However, you can submit your photos in digital form, along with the physical photos, if you want them published on our website.
9 – Entry fees are as follows: $5.00 for first entry and $3.00 for each additional entry.
50% discount for Photo students with ID.
Friends of Tifft members get first entry for free.
Payment due upon submission of photos
Entries will be judged on the basis of creativity, photographic quality and effectiveness in conveying the beauty and/or unique character of Tifft Nature Preserve. Entries that do not comply with the rules will be disqualified.

Snow
We had a record drought of snow here in WNY.... which finally ended yesterday on December 1st. We all went to bed with not seeing snow since mid april and woke up to 5 inches of snow on the ground in most places. There was no transition period this year with soft flurries and dustings on the ground. BAM! Snow. However, with the still warm temperatures, it melted pretty quickly and so there are no photos of Tifft covered in white yet... However there is a big snow storm predicted for this Weekend. Hopefully we don't get crushed!
