Bird Boxing
Why hello there. Back in the spring, me and my fellow Americorps member Brandon, put together a grant to help out the birding here at Tifft. Our idea and purpose for the grant proposal was to generally fix existing boxes, and build 5 new boxes that can be used for educational purposes.
The box works like this; you can raise and lower the swallow/bluebird box on a post. This way the box can stay at an appropriate height 99% of the time. When we take tours of certain groups out through the preserve, we can lower the box and open it, showing the students the nest and eggs inside. Of course we can't do this often, and it only works in the Spring. However with certain tours, we feel as if this will add a great educational aspect to our programming.
Below are a few photos of when we put together the first box.

This is a look inside of what bird boxes look like if you don't clean them. ew.

Constructing the new boxes and posts.

Raised....

Lowered...!
Thanks to Buffalo Ornithological Society for the grant money.
