Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas everyone!
I know the weather has been unpredictable. Right now its nice outside, but here are some nice snowy pictures to get you in the mood.

These are part of my "Nature In Western New York" series. I want you to appreciate all of what WNY nature has to offer. Chestnut ridge park is home to an old growth Hemlock Forest and a natural gas leak in a grotto underneath a waterfall. When lit it produces a flame that stays even behind the water.

Snowshoeing!
We got our first Snowshoe-ers of the season today!

They had lots of fun and told us they were planning on coming back, that's what we like to hear! We hope to see you guys soon... and bring friends! We also saw a few other people who brought their own snowshoes. For any of you who don't know, we do rent snowshoes here!
We would also like to thank everyone who brought us Christmas cookies! We appreciate them.. they were delicious.

Happy Holidays!
I and everyone here at Tifft wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and we hope you stay safe, warm, eat yourself silly, don't be a Scrooge or Grinch and enjoy time spent with family.
Here are some photos of our festive cabin we decorated...
Here we are before we added lights to the back windows.

And here we are after..

Peace on Earth and Goodwill Towards Men....
That's what Christmas is all about Charlie Brown.

Aftermath
So as any of you in the Buffalo area would know.. we had a small snowfall yesterday. Just a bit of snow that caused us to shut down Tifft before we got stuck here. Here are some pictures that Brandon took while we were still here..
Cabin during the snow storm

And here's our bird feeder... with birds braving the snow for some food.. which reminds me I have to refill it today.

Here is our parking lot and you can barely make out the tree line

Heading up the mounds a little bit... here's the cabin.. you can see how bad visibility was.

This is where you should see the lake... just a gray wall..

And here are Brandon's feet stuck in the snow...

Now this morning after it all went down... I went out and took a few aftermath photos..
Our lovely trees outside the cabin.. Looks like a Christmas card!

Our fence with snow plowed up to the top..

Our parking low plowed so we can get in...

And here's the cabin after..

Now get ready because it all happens again on Sunday! According to reports we will be getting another blast of snow Sunday morning with high winds blowing snow, so be careful. Also later that night we of course will get lake-effect snow. So like good boy-scouts, be prepared.

Photos and Updates
The cabin renovations are complete!!
We have not yet put everything back to normal, (partly because we will be deciding how things will go back) but I'll give you a glimpse of how everything looks like. Its awfully nice.
First off, the volunteer room wall is now down. It opens up the window side even more don't you think?

Then part of the loft came down, opening up my view, leaving the cabin with an open airy feeling.

Isn't everything looking nice?
Also the Mosquito Boardwalk project is now complete and open!

Now the part of mosquito that was in danger of muck and flooding is raised so no one has to wade through marsh.
Here are some photos of the preserve in the fresh new snow and a few that I took earlier.
Heads up 7-up

Ironically it was on chickadee day

Now to the snow!
2 paths diverged in a wood (my apologies to Robert Frost)

It looks quite ominous but just over the lake really..

Looks like we still have some Turkeys around.

What would Tifft be without deer?

(notice the snow around the snout)

and that's all... see you next week!

beaver Log. Day 2
Here is a short little beaver update
I think the beavers are running out of material such as sticks and branches to dam up the pipe with. It was semi-open today. However we are also on a regular schedule of taking care of the blockage so maybe they are realizing it is a futile attempt. Never underestimate a determined native with a lay of the land though! Its how we won our independence from England. The beaver in this instance would be the U.S. militia men.
I cleared what little was blocking the pipe, though the water level is down so maybe they don't feel the need to block it as much as they did because it was doing a pretty good job of keeping the water out.
One new update is that Dave or Brandon must have cleared a hole in the dam that stretched across the creek further down snakeroot.

As you can see, the hole is little and yet to be blocked, but the water is pretty equal on both sides. Winter may be keeping these guys inside because over the last 24 hours it snowed and the temperature dropped considerably.
Also, being out in the middle of the dam, here is a view from the center of snakeroot channel.

Also a warning... DO NOT GO OUT ON THE ICE! It is DANGEROUS. That is all.
